his skills. Self taught and very dedicated to the development of his play, Mikey
spent countless hours practicing and rehearsing with others. Upon his arrival
back in San Diego in 1979 he immediately hooked up with a local reggae group

demands Mikey took a short hiatus from music, however always squeezing in
practice time while working a full time carrier in the insurance business.
Although one could not keep him down long, he performed with numerous cover
bands along the way in many San Diego establishments. It was 1992 when Mikey was
ask to work with other San Diegan’s in the formation of one of the first, if not
the first Santana tribute band “Viva Santana”. From the start it was a hit
locally, then internationally and nationally. To this day the group still
performs regularly. It was with this group that Mikey produced and rerecorded
the one time 1970 hit “GREEN EYED LADY”. Sometime around 1998 was when he
joined the Mario Olivares group. A San Diego based acoustic guitarist playing
original and cover tunes. He was on three or four of Mario’s Cd’s. During his
stint with Mario, Mikey hooked up with the great guitarist, Joe Cano. He started
performing with Joe all around Southern California, Hawaii and Japan, and was
named as his percussionist for the release of his CD “Native Summer”. It was Joe
who introduced Mikey to Hawaii’s own “Willie K“. Associations have come out of
that ever since. Approximately 2005 Mikey formed his Latin Jazz quartet "NovaLive"
where he played steady every week for a number of years in beautiful La Jolla
and Long Bch.Ca. In 2007 he moved slightly north into Orange county Ca. where he
played with other local groups here and there before joining the tribute act
“Savor”. They are based out of North Los Angeles and released
their first CD, titled after the band. By the way, this is also a Santana
tribute band. Only by divine intervention was Mikey able to be on the stage,
performing with the band “MALO”, Jorge Santana, Gabe Manzo, Arcelio Garcia
and others. It was while with Savor that that opportunity came to be. During
this same time period he had the pleasure and blessing to record and perform
with his friend Dr. Fred Lanuza, a San Diego based composer/pianist.
He participated in five or six of his CD projects, all Latino based music.
It was around 2016 when a third Santana tribute band ask for my help as their
Timballero was departing . How can one refuse. Thus the relationship with
" SantanaWays " began.
Michael has since semi-retired and living in Eastern Carolina where he and his wife are
